Best 3PL for Amazon Sellers: FBA Prep and Overflow Storage

FBA takes the last mile off your plate. It does not take the prep, the packaging, or the storage math.

We built and ran consumer brands for decades before we fulfilled a single order for anyone else, so we know that a shipment held at a fulfillment center is not a paperwork issue. It is inventory you cannot sell.

This guide covers what Amazon actually asks of an inbound shipment, the prep work that repeats with every replenishment, and why reserve storage outside the network is what keeps a listing in stock without paying Amazon's rates to hold a season of inventory.

The short version

  • Prep is not a setup task. It repeats every replenishment, changes as the catalog grows, and has to hold when Q4 runs several times an ordinary month.
  • Non-compliant cartons cost twice. Amazon can apply its own prep and labeling and charge for it, or hold the shipment. Either way the units are not selling.
  • Storage sets a quiet ceiling. Send too little and you stock out; send too much and you hold units in the most expensive space available to you.
  • Reserve storage fixes the arithmetic. Hold the depth your sales require in space priced for holding it, and ship Amazon what fits the window.
  • Check requirements at the source. Amazon publishes current prep requirements in Seller Central and updates them periodically.

What Amazon asks of an FBA shipment

Fulfillment by Amazon is the simpler path for a great many sellers, and it earns that reputation. Amazon picks, packs, delivers, and handles the customer afterward. What Amazon does not do is receive whatever arrives at the dock. Every unit has to show up labeled, protected, packed to the standard the network expects, and sized to the capacity your account holds that month.

Prep is the part sellers tend to underestimate. It is not a setup task — it repeats with every replenishment, changes as the catalog grows, and has to hold when fourth-quarter volume runs several times an ordinary month. When units arrive without a scannable barcode, without a bag where a bag is required, or without the protection a fragile item needs, Amazon can apply its own prep and labeling services and charge for them, or hold the shipment.

Amazon publishes current requirements in Seller Central and updates them periodically, so that is the version to build against rather than a summary on anyone's website, including this one. Thousands of brands run FBA well, year after year. It does mean FBA is an operations decision as much as a marketplace decision, and the question worth asking is whether the warehouse behind it can prepare a compliant carton on an ordinary Tuesday and on the week before Thanksgiving.

"Balancing inventory and responding to spikes is critical."

The prep work that happens before the carton ships

Prep is detailed, repetitive work. These are the items we handle in house, and they are fair questions to ask any provider you are considering.

Prep step What it involves, and where it goes wrong
FNSKU labeling and barcode control Every unit carries the right identifier, applied so the manufacturer barcode does not compete with it at the scanner. Mixed cases, variant-heavy catalogs, and relabeled returns are where a second verification earns its keep.
Poly-bagging with required warnings Apparel, soft goods, and anything Amazon requires bagged gets a bag carrying the suffocation warning language, sealed with no loose edge for the packing line to catch.
Bundling and multipacks Sets assemble to specification and ship as a single sellable unit, labeled so an associate handles them as one item rather than separating them on receipt.
Protection for fragile, liquid, and sharp items Bubble wrap, opaque bagging, and taping to the standard for the category, so units survive the network rather than returning as damages.
Expiration, lot, and date coding Consumables and regulated categories carry the dating Amazon requires, in a readable position and captured in the record so first-expired stock moves first.
Carton build and shipment labeling Cartons packed within weight and dimension limits, marked where oversized handling applies, and labeled to the shipment plan so receipt happens quickly rather than in an exception queue.

This is value-added work, and it belongs on a floor set up for it. We run ours in house with unit-level verification, which is how we hold 99.95% inventory accuracy and 99.93% operational compliance. The practices behind those numbers are covered in our 3PL warehouse management guide, and the deepest variant counts we see are in the best 3PL fulfillment for apparel guide.

Reserve storage and the capacity question

The second half of FBA is storage, and it is the half that quietly sets a ceiling on sales. Amazon governs how much of its network you can occupy, publishes your current capacity in Seller Central, and prices long-held inventory to encourage it to move. Send too little and you risk a stockout on a listing that was performing. Send too much and you hold units in the most expensive space available to you.

Reserve storage at a 3PL solves the arithmetic. You hold the depth of inventory your sales require, in space priced for holding it, and send Amazon what fits the window you have been given. Our Georgia facility in Ellabell is a 760,000 square foot Class A climate-controlled building with 55,000 pallet positions, operated with capacity headroom — so a brand scaling into the fourth quarter has room to grow into rather than a building that gridlocks in week two.

If you import, the reserve position does more than hold pallets. The facility operates within Foreign Trade Zone 104, so duty defers until goods enter U.S. commerce and consolidated weekly entries lower Merchandise Processing Fees. For a seller carrying a season of stock, that lowers the cash cost of holding it. The mechanics are in the FTZ Georgia guide.

Replenishment on Amazon's clock

Prep and storage only pay off if the shipment lands when the listing needs it, and where your inventory sits sets how much schedule you have. Ellabell sits 24 miles from the Port of Savannah. We own our drayage fleet — more than 80 tractors and 300 chassis — so imported containers move from berth to building on our schedule and detention and demurrage stay low. The building runs 132 cross-dock doors, so a container can be received, prepped, and staged for an outbound fulfillment center shipment without waiting on a door. The port side is covered in the 3PL Savannah guide.

Outbound, a Georgia coastal position reaches roughly 70% of the U.S. population within two-day small parcel ground service via I-95 and I-16, with coverage improving inland along the Savannah-to-Atlanta corridor — and that same corridor puts restock shipments close to a large share of the fulfillment center network by truckload, LTL, or small parcel. Every parcel rate shops against our carrier contracts. The regional case is made in the 3PL Georgia guide.

We also run nodes in Perris, California and McAlester, Oklahoma on the same systems, near major Amazon hubs, so a second location can be added later without a second integration project.

The systems behind the counts

An FBA seller runs two inventory positions at once: the units inside Amazon's network and the units in reserve. Whether reconciling them is straightforward or painful is settled long before a restock is created — it is settled by where the integration lives. A standalone connector maintained outside the warehouse system needs its own upkeep every time a platform changes. An integration built inside a tier-one warehouse management system stays current with the system itself.

We built ours that way. Amazon feeds into an integration layer covering more than 75 marketplaces and sales channels, which flows directly into the latest version of Manhattan WMS. Orders, inventory, tracking, and returns move continuously, with no export files or overnight batches waiting in a queue. Allocation rules set channel priority, so an FBA replenishment, a wholesale order, and a storefront order draw from one accurate pool without anyone reserving units by hand. The same architecture serves a storefront running alongside Amazon, covered in the best 3PL for Shopify guide.

The building keeps pace with the systems. Temperature control runs throughout, and an Exotec robotic storage and retrieval system coming online in Q1 2027 adds capacity through robots rather than through proportional labor. Behind it is an experienced team in a workplace certified as a Great Place to Work — and in the weeks when every warehouse is stretched, that team is the reason the numbers hold.

FBA, SFP, or both

We will say plainly that prep and overflow support is not the only answer, and we would rather tell you early than sell you into work you do not need.

FBA remains the simpler path for compact, fast-moving items, and prep and reserve storage keep it running as the catalog deepens and capacity limits tighten. Seller-Fulfilled Prime fits better when you want the Prime badge while keeping inventory in one pool that also serves wholesale, retail, and your own storefront. What it asks in return is weekend operations and steady attention to the metrics.

Plenty of brands run both, using FBA for the fast movers and Seller-Fulfilled Prime for the variant-heavy and oversized listings. Run from one provider and one inventory pool, that is one operation instead of two, and the same reserve position feeds whichever side of the catalog needs units that week. Across our FBA, FBM, and SFP volume we have measured 99.9% order accuracy and 99.85% on-time delivery — delivery being the harder measure, since it includes the carrier leg after the parcel leaves our dock.

"Execute and good things will happen. Get the fundamentals right, carton after carton, and the listing stays live, the customer comes back, and the brands we serve grow. It is a simple idea, and it has held up since 1908."

Key takeaways

  • ► FBA moves the last mile to Amazon and leaves prep, packaging, and storage planning with the seller. Amazon publishes current requirements in Seller Central.
  • ► Prep is repeating work: FNSKU labeling, poly-bagging with required warnings, bundling, category protection, date coding, and compliant carton build.
  • ► Reserve storage separates the inventory your sales require from the Amazon capacity you hold that month, so restocks are sized to the window.
  • ► Foreign Trade Zone 104 defers duty on imported stock held in reserve, and weekly entries lower Merchandise Processing Fees.
  • ► Ellabell sits 24 miles from the Port of Savannah with owned drayage and 132 cross-dock doors, reaching roughly 70% of the U.S. population in two-day ground.
  • ► Amazon feeds a 75+ channel integration layer into Manhattan WMS, where allocation rules keep every channel drawing from one accurate pool.
  • ► FBA and Seller-Fulfilled Prime can run from that same pool as one operation rather than two.

Frequently asked questions

What does FBA prep include?

FNSKU labeling and barcode control, poly-bagging with the required warning language, bundling and multipack assembly, protection for fragile and liquid items, expiration and lot coding where the category requires it, and carton build and shipment labeling. Amazon publishes the current specification for each in Seller Central.

Can a 3PL hold overflow inventory outside Amazon's network?

Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons FBA sellers bring in a partner. You hold reserve depth in space priced for holding it and send Amazon shipments sized to the capacity you have, which keeps listings in stock without paying network storage rates on a full season of inventory.

How quickly can an imported container be prepped and sent on to Amazon?

The container is drayed 24 miles from the Port of Savannah on our own fleet, received through 132 cross-dock doors, prepped in house, and staged for an outbound fulfillment center shipment. Working the inbound and the prep in one building removes the transfer legs that usually set the timeline.

What happens if a shipment arrives at Amazon non-compliant?

Amazon can apply its own prep and labeling services and charge for them, or hold the shipment pending correction. Both outcomes delay units becoming sellable, which is why compliance is checked before the carton leaves rather than discovered at receipt.

Should I use FBA or Seller-Fulfilled Prime?

FBA is simpler for compact, fast-moving items. Seller-Fulfilled Prime suits brands that want the Prime badge while keeping inventory in one pool that also serves wholesale, retail, and their own storefront — at the cost of weekend operations and closer attention to delivery metrics. Many brands run both, using FBA for fast movers and SFP for variant-heavy or oversized listings.
